England coach Gareth Southgate says he spoke to Manchester United captain Harry Maguire ahead of naming the Nations League squad.
Maguire was included in the Three Lions squad to face Iceland and Denmark in Nations League fixtures next month on the same day that his trial for alleged offences in Greek was taking place.
The 27-year-old was not required to attend the hearing in Greece having pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated assault and attempted bribery of official on Saturday.
"It's clearly a decision that is not straightforward and a decision I could only take on the information that I have. I've spoken with Harry. I have the insight to the story which is very different to what is being reported," said Southgate.
"You can only make decisions on facts you are aware of. If the facts or information changes further down the line, I have to review that decision. I have a fantastic relationship with the boy. Harry has been an outstanding character for us, I've no reason to doubt what he's telling me and it's important for him to now he has my support at this moment.
"Harry regrets the fact he's brought that attention and focus on the team and he apologised for that, but he has his own side of the story that will come out in time."
