A 47-year-old man was jailed 13 years and given ten strokes of the cane for having 33.83gm of syabu.Sessions Court Judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim handed the sentence to Juanis George after he pleaded guilty to the charge against him on Monday. Juanis was found with the drug at 4.45pm on Feb 15 this year at a house in Kg Lakut, Papar.

The offence under Section 39A(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act carries a jail term of between five years and life imprisonment, and whipping, on conviction. During mitigation, Juanis who was not represented asked for a lenient sentence saying that he has family to look after.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Megat Mahathir Megat Tharih Affendy urged the court to impose a deterrent punishment due to the seriousness of the offence. The court ordered Juanis to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest on Feb 15 this year.
