Kota Kinabalu: Five people including a woman were charged at the Magistrate’s Court here Friday with trafficking 210.33gm of syabu.Johaniskin Nawir, 41, Mansur Baba, 39, Ismail Mading, 27, Muhajra Hajaruddin, 22, and Lalusa Maamor, 42, were accused of committing the offence at 3pm on Sept 13, in a unit at Block G, University Utama Condominium, Telipok. No plea was recorded from the five after the charge was read out to them before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles.

The charge under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, carries a punishment with either the death penalty or life in prison and whipping with a minimum of 15 strokes. Inspector Lim Swee Beng, who prosecuted applied for a new mention date while waiting for the chemist’s report. He also applied for all accused to be remanded further as the charge against them was unbailable. Lovely set Oct 13 for mention of the case and ordered the accused to be further remanded.

In another case, a 59-year-old man was charged with stealing a motorcycle. Mohd Zainudin Maharuf pleaded not guilty to stealing a motorcycle belonging to one Md Amirudin Abdul at 6.40am on Sept 20 in front of a house at Kg Ketiau in Putatan. He was charged under Section 379A of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of between one year and seven years and liability of a fine if convicted. Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik prosecuting in applying for a case management date proposed bail at RM4,000 in two sureties.

Zainudin, who was not represented, applied for a lower bail amount on the grounds that he was self-employed and married with five children. The court set Oct 23 for case management and released Zainudin on a bail of RM2,000 in two sureties.
