Barcelona presidential candidate Jordi Farre has called on president Josep Maria Bartomeu to resign.

Farre was reacting to the motion of censure made against Bartomeu, which attracted over 20,000 signatures.

Farre was among the leading organisers for the motion and said: "Today has been crazy. People have turned upside down and we are very happy. I was optimistic from day one. The opinion of the members had been very much felt and I have contact with a part of the membership who until now had been very close to Bartomeu and now they wanted a change.

"That made me present the motion.

"I am very convinced that we will make the cut. We have been very scrupulous. At the end a notarial act has been made. This is very different from elections. It may be that someone has signed for two but we will pass the cut.

"I think Bartomeu will resign. The nearly 21,000 signatures represent 20.5% of the membership census. I don't think he will risk a referendum. It would be the first successful vote of no confidence. I ask him to resign and call the elections immediately. This is the straw that broke the camel's back and I am convinced that he will leave. More than 20,000 members have told him to leave. I sincerely believe that he will leave."
