Sabah on today’s agenda

Kuala Lumpur: A special Cabinet meeting is expected to be held in the Prime Minister’s Office at 9.30am Friday, reported Berita Harian (BH).

The special meeting will involve the attendance of all cabinet ministers, and it would most likely touch on issues related to the economy and public health amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, of which cases have been on the rise, particularly in Sabah. BH said that there was speculation that the meeting might become a platform for discussions to be held about a minor cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

BH also reported that if the matter of a cabinet reshuffle was discussed, it would particularly centre around the appointment of a deputy prime minister from Umno.

“Yes. Tomorrow morning at the PM’s office. (We are) not sure about the agenda, but it could be related to Covid-19,” said a senior officer attached to a minister, in confirming tomorrow’s meeting.

The weekly Cabinet meeting was held on Wednesday, making the news of this special meeting fueling speculation that the government might be making a big announcement in the evening.

BH cited an invitation which had been distributed with regard to tomorrow’s special meeting. The invitation called upon all cabinet members to confirm their attendance. It was also learnt that the prime minister had asked all cabinet ministers and their officers, who are slated to attend tomorrow’s special meeting, to ensure that they tested negative for Covid-19.

During this past week, Malaysia’s daily Covid-19 cases have been numbering in the high hundreds.

The government had previously said that it would re-impose the Movement Control Order (MCO) if the number of new daily Covid-19 cases reached the three digit mark once again.

However, Muhyiddin has repeatedly said that the government would try to avoid reimposing the MCO as the move had a huge impact on the country’s socio-economy.
