Kota Kinabalu: The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) described a Malaysian court’s decision to sentence a couple to 10-12 years’ imprisonment for violating the Anti-Trafficking In Persons and Smuggling Of Migrants Act as a “big win” for a Filipina victim.A Philippine national daily newspaper reported early this week that the Session Court in Kuala Lumpur found a Malaysian couple (employers) guilty of violating the Act. The court also ordered the couple to pay RM20,000 (Php232, 976) in damages to the Filipino domestic helper.

“The conviction is a big win for us during this Covid-19 pandemic and is the first victory for a Filipina in Malaysia,” Under-secretary Sarah Lou Arriola said in a statement.
