8 inmates, including Sayyaf man, kill guard and flee

BASILAN: With the use of the victim’s service fire arm, eight inmates of the Basilan provincial jail killed their guard while executing a jail break here Oct 13.

Isabela City Police Chief Lt. Col. Homer Dumalag identified the slain jail guard as Asbi Florencio Asbi.

“Asbi was trying to prevent the inmates’ escape but was overpowered. He was shot and killed with his own service firearm,” Dumalag said.

He said the jailbreak took place past 5pm at the village of Sumagdang in Isabela City.

The Police Chief a manhunt operation was immediately executed to recapture the escapees.

Meanwhile,  Army Joint Task Force  Basilan Commander  Col. Domingo Gobway said the military would help police hunt the escapees especially since one of them (inmates) jailed for seven counts of murder.

Gobway identified the inmate as Hassan Lahaman, a member of the Abu Sayyaf, and a native of Bohe Ibu village in Lamitan City, also in Basilan province.
