Kota Kinabalu: A 21-year-old man was fined RM1,000 or two months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court, Friday, for having illegal gambling paraphernalia.Jobless Aroon Gurmit Singh pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to having several illegal lottery tickets at 4.55pm on May 31 this year at the Skymobile shop in Kepayan Ridge. Inspector Lim Swee Beng told the court that Aroon was arrested by a police team who went to the premises following information of lottery gambling activity there.

When police arrived, a man, later identified as Aroon, who was inside the premises, was seen writing something and was later detained. The police seized the gambling paraphernalia, including RM140 in cash from Aroon. Aroon was charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act carries a jail term of up to six months, or a fine of up to RM3,000, or both, upon conviction.

Duty Counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence representing Aroon, requested for a lower fine on the grounds that Aroon is currently jobless but he used to work as a waiter and vegetable seller before the Movement Control Order. Aroon is taking care of his mother and also responsible of paying the house rent, said Lim. The prosecution applied for an adequate sentence. The court also ordered the seized money to be forfeited by the prosecution as the government revenue.
