St Etienne may ask Leicester City about a replacement for Wesley Fofana.
Fofana is expected to be confirmed as a Foxes signing today after ASSE announced terms had been agreed on Wednesday.
ASSE now need to find a replacement for coach Claude Puel and Leicester could supply an option.
Filip Benkovic is being discussed, along with Chelsea's summer signing Malang Sarr.
ASSE would prefer a permanent deal, with a budget of €7m to spend in the coming days.
