Sabah now tops nation's Covid deaths and cumulative cases

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah now has the most Covid-19 deaths in Malaysia at 43, out of a national fatality total of 167, as the state suffers its second wave of the pandemic that has contributed to the nation's third wave.

The closest state in terms of fatality is Selangor at 24, almost half Sabah’s deaths, data from the Ministry of Health showed.

Four more Covid-19 deaths and 429 new cases were recorded in Sabah out of a latest national caseload of 660 on Wednesday, said the ministry.

Three women and a man, aged between 47 and 80, all with prior illnesses, have died at Sandakan (two deaths), Kota Kinabalu and Lahad Datu hospitals.

Sabah’s cases today was the state’s third highest, with the second highest seen yesterday at 443 and the highest one at 488 cases only last Sunday.

Sabah is also at the top of the national cumulative cases list at 5,493 currently, almost double Selangor’s cumulative cases of 2,814, which is the second highest in the nation.

Most of Sabah's new cases today were close contacts at 197, while 78 cases were found in existing clusters and 154 other screening cases. Sabah had no new clusters today after registering four yesterday.

All 11 red zones (districts with 40 or more cases) recorded new cases today with Sandakan topping the caseload with 97 cases, followed by Kota Kinabalu (89 cases), Semporna (56), Tuaran (31), Penampang (29), Papar (26), Tawau, (24), Kunak (14), Putatan (13), Lahad Datu (11) and Kota Belud (2).

All yellow zones (districts with 1 to 39 cases) except Pitas and Kuala Penyu had new cases today with Kudat topping the list with eight cases followed by Tambunan (6), Tenom (6), Keningau (5), Beaufort (4), Ranau (3), Kinabatangan (2), Kota Marudu (2) and Sipitang (1).  

A total of 233 more patients were discharged, but authorities did not give a daily breakdown for Sabah and its districts like before.

Nabawan, Tongod and Telupid remained Sabah’s only green zones or areas with no active cases.
