Manchester United had a deadline day bid for Ismaila Sarr rejected.
The Red Devils tried to sign the player on loan before the transfer window closed, per the Manchester Evening News.
But the move was turned down, as Watford wanted any agreement to include an obligation to buy.
United wanted no more than an option to buy.
Sarr is a pacy and tricky winger who excelled in the Premier League last term, and was even linked with a move to Liverpool.
It is unclear if United will go back in for him before the October 16 deadline or during the January transfer window.
