Burnley remain winless this season after drawing 0-0 at Brighton on Friday night.
The Clarets, having their worst ever start to a top-flight season, are on two points from seven games, while the Seagulls have not won in six league games.
"We didn't create as much as we'd like," Dyche told BBC Sport. "I thought the mentality was right. We looked more like ourselves with our defensive shape and urgency.
"We know we have to create better chances but it's a base to build on. We're never a million miles away. We're getting closer.
"Ben Mee will get fitter and sharper.
"There were moments where we had a good foothold and we defended well when we had to."
Burnley captain Ben Mee added: "On the whole, I'm happy with a point. It's a tough place to come. They defended well as a team.
"We've got a lot to work on. But getting a point here is positive.
"No panic. Plenty of games to go, a long way to go."
