Former Liverpool fullback Glen Johnson has urged the club to retain Gini Wijnaldum.

The Dutch midfielder, who was linked with Barcelona in the summer, has less than a year remaining on his contract.

"I think they need to keep him," Johnson told compare.bet.

"I think he's a fantastic footballer, he's one of those all-round midfielders, great on the ball, not an out-and-out goalscorer, and not an out-and-out defender, so he's one of those utility men in midfield who can play in any one of the three positions.

"And I think he's a fantastic squad player and, obviously, the experience he's gained in the last few years is hard to replace."
