Former Bayern Munich defender Thomas Helmer admits bottling a move to Liverpool.
The centre back, who was part of the Germany team who won the European Championships held in England in 1996, was an integral part of the dominant Bayern side of the mid-to-late 90s alongside Markus Babbel who did move to Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer of 2000.
“I didn't have the courage to go to Liverpool," Helmer admitted to Sport1 of the offer he received in 1998.
“At that point, I was a bit cowardly."
"The prospect of winning a few more titles was more important to me than adventure and money."
Helmer did move to the Premier League a year later with Sunderland but only played two matches before moving to back to Germany on loan with Hertha Berlin and then retiring.
