Jail for obstructing cops

Kota Kinabalu: A 28-year-old woman was sentenced to seven months’ jail for obstructing two policemen from discharge their duties.  

Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles meted out the sentence to Nurin Joel who pleaded guilty to the charge against her on Tuesday.

She had blocked Corporal Abdullah Bakir and Corporal Razalynizam Abd Samad from performing their duties by uttering abusive words at them at 12.30pm on Dec 8 this year along Jalan Terowong in Sepanggar here.

The offence under Section 186 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to two years, or fine of up to RM10,000, or both, on conviction.

The court ordered Nurin to serve the jail sentence from the date of her arrest and referred to the Immigration Department after completing the sentence.

The court heard that the policemen, who were conducting Criminal Prevention patrol at the area, saw a car driven by a woman and ordered the driver to stop the car.

The policemen then asked the woman later identified as Nurin to produce her document and driving licence.

They also asked the male passenger inside the car to also produce his document but the passenger who was Nurin’s brother had no document on him and he was asked to go out from the car and follow them to the police station but Nurin tried to prevent the policemen from arresting her brother.

During the incident, a scuffle happened between Nurin and the policemen when Nurin tried to stop the policemen from arresting her brother.

Nurin also uttered abusive words against the policemen during the incident.
