PETALING JAYA: The health ministry has reported 2,232 Covid-19 cases and four deaths in the past 24 hours. In a tweet, the ministry said there were 1,006 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 109,115. The total number of infections now stands at 138,224.

There are 28,554 active cases with 187 patients being treated in intensive care and 87 requiring respiratory assistance. Meanwhile, the four deaths brings the total number of fatalities to 555. The latest fatalities involve two men and two women, aged between 47 and 56. Three were Malaysians, all from Selangor, while the foreigner was from Sabah. The three Malaysians had other medical conditions, including diabetes. Of the fresh cases, only six were imported while 2,232 were local infections. Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 557, of which 404 were detected at clusters and screening of close contacts. This was followed by Johor with 396 cases and Sabah with 374 infections. Perlis reported the fewest number of cases, with three infections. Kuala Lumpur reported 204 cases followed by Sarawak (153), Penang (112), Negeri Sembilan (102), Kelantan (95), Perak (51), Pahang (46), Terengganu (41), Kedah (40), Melaka (37), Putrajaya (13) and Labuan eight.

A total of 194 cases, Noor Hisham said, were detected at clusters linked to lockups, immigration depots and prisons. This includes the Tembok Choh cluster, the Jalan Harapan prison cluster, the Tembok Gajah cluster and Pagar Siput cluster. The health ministry reported eight new clusters today detected in Johor, Sarawak, Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan, Perak and Terengganu. Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the clusters are the Jalan Keluli cluster in Johor; the Medan Idaman cluster in Kuala Lumpur; the Jelita cluster in Sarawak; the Kampung Renok and Kampung Geting clusters in Kelantan; the Lumut Barat cluster in Perak; and the Kubang Bujuk and Kejaya clusters in Terengganu. The Jalan Keluli cluster involves a workplace in the Kota Tinggi and Segamat districts, in Johor. The cases were first detected during targeted screening at a factory in Pasir Gudang on Dec 30. A total 0f 180 people were screened, with 42 testing positive. The Medan Idaman cluster, which involves Cheras and Titiwangsa both in Kuala Lumpur, was first detected during a targeted screening at a market on Jan 6. To date, 84 have been screened, with 10 testing positive. The index case for the Jelita cluster in Miri, Sarawak, tested positive during a screening when the individual travelled to the state from Melaka on Jan 5. To date, 54 have been screened, with eight testing positive. Meanwhile, the Kampung Renok and Kampung Geting clusters, in Kelantan, were detected in Gua Musang and Tumpat, respectively. The index case for the Kampung Renok cluster was detected on Jan 1 when he showed symptoms after travelling from Selangor. To date, 73 have been screened, with 23 testing positive. The index case for the Kampung Geting cluster was detected on Jan 6 during a screening after the individual had travelled from Penang. Thirty five have been screened to date, with 11 testing positive. The index case for Lumut Barat cluster in Perak, who had travelled from Kuala Lumpur, was detected on Jan 1 during a screening. To date 121 have been screened, with 11 testing positive. Meanwhile, the Kubang Bujuk and Kejaya clusters in Terengganu were detected at a religious centre in Kuala Terengganu and at a Felda settlement in Dungun. The index case for the Kubang Bujuk tested positive on Jan 8. To date 45 have been screened with 10 testing positive. The index case for the Kejaya cluster tested positive on Jan 6 during a screening. This cluster involves settlers in Felda Kerteh 4. Ninety five have been screened, with nine testing positive. Noor Hisham went on to reveal that four clusters came to an end, namely the Jalan Kemang cluster, Taman Bunga cluster, Damar Laut cluster and Awan Baru construction site cluster.
