Kota Kinabalu: The year that just ended saw the 27-month-old Parti Warisan Sabah-led (Warisan) State Government collapsed and replaced by Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), a new coalition consisting Perikatan Nasional (PN), Barisan Nasional (BN) and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS).

GRS took over the helm of the State Government after winning 38 of the 73 state assembly seats (including 13 new state seats) up for grabs in the 16th State Election (PRN16) on Sept 26, 2020, while the ruling Warisan Plus, consisting Warisan, Upko, DAP, PKR and Amanah, only managed 32 seats.

The GRS seats increased to 41 after all three Independent candidates who won, namely Ruddy Awah (Pitas), Datuk Rubin Balang (Kemabong) and Datuk Masiung Banah (Kuamut), later joined the coalition, giving it more than enough seats to form the new State Government.

Thirty-seven seats are required to form a simple majority government. Previously it was 31 seats (before the 13 new state seats were added in) from the total 60 state seats.
