The reintroduction of the Movement Control Order (MCO) since Jan 13 by the government to contain the COVID-19 pandemic has not affected the performance of the national lawn bowls athletes, who are undergoing online training from their homes.
National lawn bowls squad head coach Zuraidi Puteh said his charges had also undergone online training when the first MCO was enforced in March last year and when Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Selangor came under the Conditional MCO (CMCO) from October 14-27.
He said the national lawn bowlers decided not to take up training under quarantine at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil because they felt other national athletes were more in need of the accommodation facilities there.
“We are monitoring their training at home online each day including in terms of fitness and techniques,” he said. “Meaning to say, what we did before, we are doing it again as we found training at home did not hamper their performance.
“When the MCO ends (on Jan 26), we will evaluate their performance through several internal meets,” Zuraidi said.
Down the road, the 20-strong national squad will be competing in two international tournaments, in September and October.
They are the 2021 World Bowls Championships from September 7-19 in Gold Coast, Australia and the 14th Asian Lawn Bowls Championship from October 18-23 in Henan, China. – Bernama, January 21, 2021.
