Covid-19: Nine deaths, 2,433 new cases nationwide, 403 in Sabah

PETALING JAYA: The health ministry has reported 2,433 Covid-19 cases and nine deaths in the past 24 hours.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 1,277 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 108,109.

In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 135,992.

There are 27,332 active cases with 171 patients being treated in intensive care and 76 requiring respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, the nine deaths bring the number of fatalities to 551.

The latest fatalities involve six men and three women, aged between 37 and 94. Seven are Malaysians and two of the six men are foreign nationals.

They all had other medical conditions. Five were from Selangor, three from Kuala Lumpur and one from Sabah.

Of the fresh cases, only seven were imported while 2,426 were local infections, which involved 1,784 Malaysians and 642 foreigners.

Selangor notched the highest number of cases again with 730 infections, followed by Sabah (403) and Johor (321).

KL reported 231 cases, followed by Penang (189), Negeri Sembilan (144), Kelantan (103), Perak (80), Kedah (71), Pahang (41), Melaka (35), Terengganu (29), Sarawak (24) Labuan (17), Putrajaya (10) and Perlis (five).

Of the new cases, 86 were from clusters at detention centres, immigration depots and prisons.

The health ministry reported five new clusters today affecting Selangor, Kelantan and Sabah.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the clusters are the Cyber construction site and Texmile clusters in Selangor; the Alor Durian and Wakaf Lanas clusters in Kelantan; and the Jalan Sibuga cluster in Sabah.

The Cyber construction site involves the Sepang, Petaling, Klang and Hulu Langat districts in Selangor. The cases in this cluster were detected on Dec 31 after a screening at a construction site.

A total of 140 people have been screened, with 67 testing positive.

The Texmile cluster involves the Gombak district in Selangor. The cases in this cluster were detected after a screening of factory workers on Jan 9. A total of 351 people have been screened, with 19 testing positive.

The Alor Durian cluster involves the Tumpat and Kota Bharu districts in Kelantan, and first involved a person who was screened while travelling interstate. The patient was found to be positive on Jan 6. A total of 77 people have been screened, with 17 testing positive.

The Wakaf Lanas cluster involves the Pasir Puteh district in Kelantan, and first involved a person who was screened while travelling interstate. The patient was found to be positive on Jan 5. A total of 29 people have been screened, with 11 testing positive.

The Jalan Sibuga cluster involves the Sandakan district in Sabah, and first involved a person who was screened after exhibiting symptoms. The patient was found to be positive on Jan 7. A total of 80 people have been screened, with nine testing positive.

Noor Hisham said a total of 254 clusters are still active, with 65 clusters reporting new cases today.
