Sir Alex Ferguson has presented his former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney a gift to help him managing Derby County.

Rooney is getting a few tips from his old chief Sir Alex Ferguson – in the form of World War Two documentaries.

Fergie has been secretly helping his former Manchester United player by sending him the programmes, to toughen him up for his management role at Championship side Derby.

He gave him The World At War TV series to assist Rooney in battles on the pitch.

The 26-episode box set was the most expensive factual series ever made when it came out in 1973.

Former Watford and Leicester boss Nigel Pearson, himself a history buff, said: “I heard something this week about Wayne Rooney where Sir Alex Ferguson had given him The World At War, which was a fabulous, very moving and accurate historical TV series back in the Seventies.

"I remember watching that as a kid, and I think Wayne Rooney was apparently given that by Sir Alex Ferguson to watch and learn from."
