Former Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar has announced his retirement.
Vlaar has decided to hang up the boots with immediate effect at the age of 35.
He confirmed the decision with AZ on the club's website.
Persistent injuries forced Vlaar to announce his retirement, even though he had a contract until the end of the season.
