Manchester United striker Joe Hugill has lifted the lid on giving away a penalty for Amad Diallo in their recent U23 thumping of Liverpool.

The 17-year-old had already scored four goals, including a penalty, in the Premier League 2 match at the end of January when Tom Clayton brought down Hannibal Mejbri in the area.

But instead of Hugill scoring to make it a spectacular individual day, new signing Amad stepped up to convert the spot-kick instead.

Now Hugill has moved to clarify what really happened between him and Diallo, who was making his first appearance in a United shirt since completing a £37million move from Atalanta.

“It was the first time I had met Amad! He really wanted the first pen," Hugill told Secret Scout.

“I was like 'Nah, I'm going to have it!' When you're talking, you're like 'I need to score now.' You don't want a massive argument as well because the other team will see that.

“I was on a hat-trick, so I had to take the first pen, and for the next one, as it was my first time meeting him, I wanted him to feel welcome!"

Hugill also hailed United's new man, who is still yet to appear for the senior side.

“On the ball, his dribbling, everything. Even off the ball, for his first goal against Liverpool, he just pressed him! He's 18 as well!" he said.

After the game, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was asked about Hugill's four-goal performance.

“Four goals by Hugill, he's a top striker as well, we're looking forward to seeing his development. Amad gets a good start and why Joe didn't take the penalty himself to get five goals I'm going to ask him," Solskjaer said with a smile.
