Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel changed his mind on Billy Gilmour after watching the Scotsman in training.
The 19-year-old was expected to leave Stamford Bridge on loan after Tuchel replaced Lampard in the Blues dugout.
Gilmour was left out of Tuchel's first two match-day squads.
But the German was convinced about Gilmour's ability with some 'brilliant performances' in training, according to the Evening Standard.
It is now more likely Gilmour will see minutes for the first-team this season.
