Former Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello was surprised by Chelsea's tactics on Tuesday night.

Chelsea and Real Madrid played out a 1-1 draw in the first-leg of their Champions League semifinal.

Chelsea have never tried to find spaces in the middle. Aside from [Thibaut] Courtois's save on [Timo] Werner, the goalkeepers made no saves at all. Real Madrid played on the counterattack, I expected Chelsea to do so," Capello told Sky Italia.

“The first half was entertaining. The second half was different."

Karim Benzema levelled the score with a stunning volley in the first half.

“I think he is among the top three strikers in the world right now, after [Robert] Lewandowski and [Harry] Kane. [Erling] Haaland is the future, the others are playing in bigger clubs, maybe Kane not as much.

“Benzema did two great things tonight, one is the goal. He is an excellent point of reference for Real Madrid, he ran for two, even for Casemiro, who didn't seem to be on the pitch.

"I've never seen him as strong as he is today."
