Kota Kinabalu: Seven people were fined a total of RM10,500 by the Magistrate’s Court here Thursday for engaging in online gambling.Azameh Maseh, Ceilia Parun, Josue Tanis, Lee Yen Peng, Zamry Abdullah, Edle Adiak and Iqbal Basri, aged between 26 and 62, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to committing the offence using handphone at 8.30pm on March 19 in a house at Low-cost housing, Jalan Kalansanan in Inanam. They were each ordered to pay a fine of RM1,500 or two months jail.
The court heard from the prosecution that the seven were arrested by police, who acted on Ops Dadu information for committing the offence. The seven were charged under Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953 which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or a jail term of up to six months or both on conviction. In another case, a 34-year-old man was charged with two counts of trespassing into a house and threatening to kill a man. Muhd Ali Pichay claimed trial before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun for trespassing into a house at Kg Madsiang in Penampang at 4pm, on March 29 He was offered bail at RM2,000 in two sureties while waiting for case management on May 10.
The court also ordered Ali to report to the Investigating Officer once a month. The charge under Section 448 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to three years or a fine of up to RM5,000 or both on conviction. On the second count, Ali pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Stephanie to criminally intimidating one Maximus Beneruing at 7.21pm on March 29 at a roadside of Tuaran bypass here. The charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both on conviction. The court set May 18 for pre-trial case management and released Ali on a bail of RM2,000 in two sureties. Inspectors Suzie @ Stephanie Kupit and Albert Basiri prosecuted.
