Newcastle United got their pre-season off to a poor start as they were beaten 1-0 by York City.

Michael Duckworth's 87th minute goal was enough to secure a surprise victory for the non-league out.

Toon stars Ryan Fraser, Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin were all given their first run-outs of the season.

But they were unable to breakdown York's stubborn defence, struggling to even create many clear cut chances.

Joelinton was forced off after just 18 minutes, replaced by Dwight Gayle, who immediately set up Ryan Fraser to direct his shot off the post.

Manager Steve Bruce said after the game of Joelinton: "That is a disappointing thing.

"We all have to be careful of course, but he had a recurrence of a thigh injury.

"We don't think it is the same injury as he had towards the end of last season.

"But until we have scans and all the rest of it we can't assess it."
