Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has explained Leon Bailey's absence for victory over Newcastle.

The Jamaican was lively on his debut at Watford last week, teeing up John McGinn for Villa's goal back shortly after coming on.

Bailey, 24, played the final half-hour at Vicarage Road but, in training this week, has had a setback with the boss taking a cautious approach hoping he'll be ready for next week against Brentford.

Speaking ahead of kick-off against Newcastle, Smith told Sky Sports: "He's just felt his hamstring.

"He had an injury in the summer playing for Jamaica and it just tightened up in training and we just can't risk it."
