Watford matchwinner Ashley Fletcher was delighted with victory over Carabao Cup opponents Crystal Palace.

Under the floodlights and four minutes from the final whistle, Fletcher darted in at the back post and poked home the winner and the striker explained that he couldn't be happier.

“It's always nice to score on your debut and for me, it has been really important to get off the mark," Fletcher told the club's website.

“The lads have been fantastic in pre-season and the first game of the season. They were a little bit disappointed at the weekend because the standards here are so high and to get an opportunity tonight to score was great for me."

The 25-year-old was picked out by Cucho Hernández with a wicked ball and Fletcher explained it was a move that had been worked on in training.

“We discussed it [the movement for the goal] and obviously I was playing on the right-wing, which I'm not quite used to," he answered.

“I enjoyed it and the opportunity to play tonight is important. I've got to play where they want to play me. With Cucho's quality, I looked up and knew he was going to put it into that area, so it was just about staying onside, timing the header, run and then luckily, I got a touch to it.

“It was fantastic. I've watched games on TV and to score at that end in front of our fans is brilliant and hopefully, it's the first of many.

“First game and first song from the fans! Hopefully, I want to add to that and I'm really happy tonight."
