Tottenham Hotspur clinched a 1-0 victory over Manchester City on Sunday without the presence of star striker Harry Kane.

Much of the noise before kick-off surrounded the absence of Kane from the Spurs squad.

The England captain only returned to training late last week, and it is believed he still wants to join City this summer.

Despite the negativity, Spurs fans were given a surprise victory in their first competitive game under manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

Some sections of the crowd chanted 'are you watching, Harry Kane?' towards the end of the match.

And why wouldn't they after seeing their side take the lead after 55 minutes through Kane's indefatigable attacking partner Son Heung-min.

Having seen through a shaky opening period, Spurs took hold of the game as Son struck a low shot which deceived Ederson before crashing into the net.

Jack Grealish had a quiet debut for City, who struggled to really threaten the goal of Hugo Lloris.

"That was the idea - going beyond your limits, and I think everybody saw this today," said Nuno after the game.

"The boys go beyond... the fight, the discipline, the way they commit themselves was very good. This is what we have to do every day of our lives."

He added: "I think we can say that we have finished the matches really strong, and that is credit to the players, because they have to prepare themselves to really go all the game, and in the end to be stronger to win the small duels that make all the difference requires a lot of discipline."
