Liverpool defender Nat Phillips is convinced of the support of manager Jurgen Klopp.

Phillips is also buoyed by the faith Klopp has shown in him since calling on him to climb from the Under-23s to fill in for the first-team amid an injury crisis last season.

After signing a new deal, the defender, who helped Liverpool finish third to qualify for the Champions League last season, is determined to keep working hard for those who supported him.

“When he put that belief in me to fill the spot when we had a lot of injuries, then for the rest of the season, his faith remained in me," Phillips told the Liverpool Echo of Klopp's backing.

“With the new deal, it's a huge compliment for myself and it's something I am motivated to try and repay to the club and the fans.

“I made my debut last year and went on to have a heavy involvement in the season. And then played a part in securing Champions League qualification which was something we had to change some of our aspirations and aims for throughout the season but that's what it was at the end of the season to achieve that and having gone through so much change, and experienced so much in the year, it was huge for me.

“Last season didn't go the way we wanted it to, in the way we hoped. Obviously, the way it ended was like a sweet end to a bitter season but we want to put things right nevertheless and we have no reason not to."
