Real Madrid directors insist there was never a scramble to sign PSG striker Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe comes off contract in June and saw a Real offer rising to €180m rejected by PSG before Tuesday's transfer deadline.

However, a board source explained to ABC: "We asked them to let us know if they agreed to negotiate on Sunday instead of only Monday or Tuesday, but what was clear to us was that we weren't going to hand over the keys to the castle.

"It was a negotiation, they had an offer and it was their duty to respond. They didn't, so we'll see what happens in the next few months, but at no point was there any nervousness or tension. It was not a matter of life and death."
