Liverpool legend Michael Owen believes Curtis Jones needs a long run in the first team after his heroics against Porto.

The midfielder was everywhere for the Reds, having a hand in four of their five goals as they beat Porto 5-1 away from home in the Champions League group stages on Tuesday night.

The 20-year-old managed two assists days after scoring an impressive goal in the Premier League against Brentford.

Asked if Jones should start more often, Owen said on BT Sport: "A hundred percent but you'd say before Harvey Elliott got injured he was the man wearing that shirt. It's taken one or two injuries.

"But as Jordan Henderson mentioned he's always been in and around played here and there. It's about time for his sake of his career that he has a long run in the team.

"Maybe the unfortunate situation with a couple of injuries is going to help along that way and when you get that chance you've got to do exactly what he did tonight and had a hand in four of the five goals."
