Liverpool hero Steve McManaman has warned Curtis Jones faces his development stalling this season.

Jones has yet to feature this season having been ruled out of the opening game at Norwich City through concussion protocols while not even making the bench against Chelsea last time out.

McManaman believes a shift in position could help the Academy graduate follow the path of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

"Curtis needs to kick on again, just like every player," said McManaman to the Liverpool Echo.

"Trent hasn't stopped - his trajectory has just kept on going, from a 16, 17-year-old who was playing U18 and U23 level and then up to the first team.

"Curtis has been exactly the same. U18s, he was a superstar. U23s, he was leading goalscorer and the best player, and had to move up to the first team as he was too good for the U23s.

"He just needs to keep on doing that, keep on improving and keep on adding to his game.

"Maybe he needs to play a little bit further forward, and I'd prefer to see that. He takes people on really easily, and I want to see more of that.

"But he has to keep on improving because he's playing with Mo Salah and Sadio Mane and Jordan Henderson and Fabinho and Thiago, players of that standard. But is he good enough? Absolutely."
