Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has explained taking off Theo Walcott at halftime of their defeat at Chelsea.
Having played 45 minutes in the capital and with Saints 1-0 down, Hasenhuttl introduced midfielder Ibrahima Diallo in place of Walcott, as he dropped Oriol Romeu in as one of three central defenders.
Asked about taking off Walcott post-match, the Austrian replied: “He invested a lot in the first half and he was (had previously been) injured.
“I tried to bring a defensive midfielder in because Ori was going into the back five, that's something we did this season a few times and it works quite well I must say.
“We still had the quality on the ball, we still had the quality to play and let them run a little bit – especially after the 1-1 this was a fantastic situation."
