DONNY van de Beek's frustration boiled over during the Champions League match against Villarreal when he was again ignored by Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Not picked even as a substitute, Van de Beek was seen throwing chewing gum in the direction of the team's technical area that barely missed assistant manager Terry Phelan.
Van de Beek's visible fury lays bare his frustrations under Solskjaer as chances continue to prove hard to come by for the former Ajax man, who joined United for an initial fee of £35 million (RM197 million) last year.
It reached boiling point when the manager threw in for Nemanja Matic, Fred and Jesse Lingard as substitutes with United chasing for a win but ignored Van de Beek.
The manager was proven right as Fred and Lingard set up Cristiano Ronaldo to score the winner in the 95th minuted.
But Van de Beek was in no mood to celebrate and had to be calmed down by his teammates while venting his fury at his latest snub.
The 24-year-old who was named on the bench for the seventh time in nine games this season did not even bother to join the celebrations by the corner flag after the winner was scored.
He has only played six minutes of Premier League football this season, making a brief cameo in the 4-1 victory over Newcastle United in September.
Van de Beek is struggling to earn regular minutes due to Bruno Fernandes' undroppable status and competition has only become more fierce in recent months with the return of Lingard from loan and the arrival of Jadon Sancho.
Lingard has staked a stronger claim in the pecking order with two goals for the team so far.
Although Van de Beek and Lingard are both natural central attacking midfielders, the latter has benefited from playing out wide in recent fixtures and Van de Beek's future does seem bleak. - Agencies, October 1, 2021
