Off contract in June, the veteran centre-forward is being linked with a short-term deal at Real.
And when contacted by Mundo Deportivo about the prospect of a move, a source close to Cavani replied, "Maybe, maybe..."
Cavani started for United in yesterday's 1-1 draw with Everton, but is now regarded as cover for fellow veteran striker Cristiano Ronaldo.
A move to Real would be his first experience in the LaLiga.
