Newcastle United's new era under its Saudi Arabian owners got off to a losing start at home to Tottenham.

The Magpies went down 3-2 in front of a raucous St. James' Park crowd.

Callum Wilson gave the home fans something to sing about after just two minutes of action when he powerfully headed home from Allan Saint-Maximin's cross.

New non-executive chair Yasir Al-Rumayyan and part-owner Amanda Staveley were in the stands to witness the fervent atmosphere, but Spurs got back in the game after 17 minutes through Tanguy Ndombele.

The Frenchman has seemed to regain the confidence he showed last season as he struck an excellent shot in the top corner.

Harry Kane then got his first Premier League goal of the season with a lob over Karl Darlow.

Kane then turned provider by crossing for Son Heung-min to make it 3-1 at half-time.

Jonjo Shelvey was sent off with two yellow cards after coming on a substitute in the second-half.

Eric Dier's comical own goal gave Newcastle a glimmer of hope, but Spurs held on for the three points.

Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo was delighted with how his players handled the unique atmosphere.

"We knew we had to ignore the noise and do our job," said Nuno. "We did not start well but did an amazing job after. I'm really proud of them.

"I would like to score more, the boys would also, but Newcastle are a good team with good defenders."
