Manchester United pulled out of talks with Antonio Conte over his transfer budget demands ahead of him taking the Tottenham job.

The Mirror reports United didn't appoint Antonio Conte to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer because he demanded a £250m transfer budget for 2022.

Conte was touted as a replacement for the underperforming Solskjaer last month, but United chiefs ultimately stuck by their former player.

Conte is said to have been interested in the role when approached, but as the Tottenham job became available, he was happy to pass up the United opportunity.

The Italian manager wanted the bumper budget to use in the next two transfer windows, and United chiefs wouldn't give that to him.

Fellow managerial target Zinedine Zidane, who was sounded out by the Red Devils too, also had unsuitable demands.

The former Real Madrid boss wanted assurances he would have a certain level of control after having issues with such matters in his two spells in the Spanish capital.
