Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola praised Raheem Sterling for his successful penalty in victory over Wolves.

Sterling, for whom it was a 100th Premier League goal, had missed his three previous penalties for the Blues, and only scored one out of five in total.

He was also missing from the scene when England lost the Euro 2020 final to Italy in the summer.

Guardiola praised his star for having the guts to take it after a hat-trick of misses, but indicated that it probably would have fallen to Ilkay Gundogan or Riyad Mahrez, had either man been on the pitch.

Guardiola always used to leave the decision to players, but after a dreadful run of missing penalties said he would intervene and nominate regular takers - and Mahrez was his number one option.

"Our best taker by far is Riyad. He has shown under pressure the quality he has but he was not on the pitch," said Guardiola.

"Gundogan is another one but he is struggling a lot with his back and he has not performed well in the last two games. We must reflect what to do to recover him.

"In that moment they chose, Bernardo is a good taker and Rodri could do it but Raheem showed the personality to take it and score a goal and these are the values I appreciate."
