Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe insists a denied penalty made the difference in defeat at home to Manchester City.

Newcastle fell 4-0 at home, with Ryan Fraser being denied a penalty when 2-0 down.

Howe said, "It is simple things from our side and we were really disappointed with the second goal.

"We left ourselves a bit open in the second half and they are the best team in the world at picking you off and they are second to none at their ball retention and it made it really difficult for us."

On his side not being awarded a penalty when Ederson slid into Ryan Fraser, Howe added: "It was a clear penalty. I don't want to be a manager that every game highlights decisions that have gone wrong but it's one every game.

"The goalkeeper is clearly out of control and goes into Ryan at speed. The decision has gone against us but it's another one that has a big bearing on the game as we were well in the game. I'm struggling to get my head around why that was not overturned [by VAR]."
