Cats are known for their sassy behaviour and are not as predictable as dogs are. It is harder to know if the cat is in a good mood compared to how you can easily tell if a dog is happy. However, do you know that cats express how they feel through their eyes?

Yes, you can finally tell if your cats are pleased with you or if they are uncomfortable in certain situations or worse if they are in pain. As a cat owner, it is important to be aware of these signs to guarantee a comfortable life and to ensure the safety of your cats.

For those who have cats, you will often see your cat’s pupils changing throughout the day. Sometimes your cat will stare at you with their eyelids wide open while there are other times you caught them staring with their slit pupil. If you ever wonder what it means and what your cat is trying to tell you, let us explain to you one by one how to decipher your cat’s eye language.

Types of Cat’s Eyes.

1. Slit Eyes.

Fear or anger. Photo credit to Pexels.

Be aware if you see that your cat is looking at something with slit eyes as it means your cat is expressing its fear of something in its surroundings. Try to find what it is scared of and once you identify what it is, remove it from your cat’s surroundings so that it will be comfortable and less stressed. The last thing you want to do is to stress out your cat. Slit eyes is also an expression of anger, so if you see this and your cat is in a situation that might make it angry then most likely it is trying to tell you that it is displeased. It might be a sudden change of diet or its favourite toys are not in sight, your cat is not happy about it.

2. Slit Pupil

Pleasure or excitement. Photo credit to Pexels.

A slit pupil in cats is a good sign as it depicts pleasure or excitement. If you see that your cats are looking at something with a slit pupil, then whatever that is, it is making your cats happy. It can be a new toy or its favourite food, or the sight of an insect it is excited to hunt.

3. Unblinking Stare

Control, dominance and aggression. Photo credit to Pexels.

You will sometimes see that your cat is looking at something (or even you) with an unblinking stare. If you don’t know what it means before, you will know now! Unblinking stare means to control, dominant and aggressive. If your cat is staring at another cat without blinking, it is trying to show its dominance towards the other cat.

4. Eyelids Wide Open

A sign of trust. Photo credit to Pexels.

If you ever caught your cats staring at you with their eyelids wide open, then rejoice! As it is an ultimate symbol of trust. This means your fur baby is comfortable around you and trusts you completely as a non-threat in its surroundings.

5. Droopy Eyelids

The best cat’s eye language of all! Droopy eyelids means your cat loves you and is giving you a kitty kiss. If you ever see your cat looking at you with droopy eyelids, you can react to it by making droopy eyelids to your cat too! Seeing it replying to you again with droopy eyelids will definitely make your day!
