Cheltenham Town manager Michael Duff has confirmed that Southampton are close to signing Will Armitage.

The 16-year-old centre-back is expected to be announced as a Southampton player on Friday.

Speaking to Gloucestershire Live, Duff confirmed the deal: "We think it'll all get done today.

"Will went down to meet them on Wednesday to go through the personal terms.

"The clubs have agreed, he's gone down to have a look so it should go through in the next couple of days.

"It's a good opportunity at a Premier League club with a Category One academy. They have produced a lot of players, probably not so much in recent years, but in the past.

"It's an opportunity. It's been great since he came in pre-season. We liked him immediately, he's trained every day and he's given himself the opportunity to go to a good club, but that's all it is.

"He is a long way off being a footballer yet, but he knows that himself."
