Kota Kinabalu: Sabah saw a spike in daily Covid-19 cases to 253 today, which authorities were hoping was not caused by the recent New Year's celebrations against SOPs which could spark more infections in the near future.

An update shared by Sabah's spokesman for the crisis, Datuk Masidi Manjun, said today's cases were 92 more than yesterday.

"We're hoping this spike was not caused by the New Year's celebrations carried out against SOPs and other advice by [the Health Ministry]," it said.

"If the New Year's celebrations caused the spike, it's not impossible we'll see much higher daily cases in the future."

Like yesterday, about 19.76 percent or 50 of today's cases were children below 12 who were not eligible for vaccination yet.
