RANAU: A man and his dog who were trapped yesterday on an island in the middle of a river that swelled following heavy rain here finally freed themselves after the water subsided today.

Leonard Lawrence, 42, and his dog, had been trapped in Sungai Mokodou near Kg Takutan in Perancangan Ranau since Sunday afternoon.

Integrated efforts by police and the Fire and Rescue Department through the night was fruitless as the weather and low visibility posed a threat to the rescuers.

Rescue operation was postponed just before midnight on Sunday after food supplies were delivered to the cold and frightened victim via a highline rope system.

Fortunately, the weather condition improved this morning and the man and his dog managed to cross the river to safety.
