Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Water Department has lost more than RM150 million to water thefts in a year according to its Director Edward Lingkapo.

From the figure, a bulk of it came from Sandakan where 30 million litres of water were stolen on a daily basis while in northern Kota Kinabalu, eight million litres were lost in a day.

He said the difference between the two places was that Sandakan had a sizeable plant-water supply, thus water theft has not disrupted water supplies to the population there.

But in northern Kota Kinabalu which consists of Telipok, Manggatal, Sepanggar and a small part of Tuaran, water theft has left many with dry taps for days on end and in numerous occasions.
