PENAMPANG: Three houses rented to 20 occupants and a row of five-door “kongsi” (workers’ quarters) in Kg Koidupan, here, were destroyed in a 3:30pm fire, Wednesday.

The owner’s son, Arthur, said the fire spread so quickly due to the dry weather conditions that it destroyed all the houses.

State Fire and Rescue Assistant Director (Operations) Misran Bisara, in a statement, said the Penampang Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) received an emergency call about the incident at 3.39pm.

Five firemen and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) from Penampang BBP assisted by nine firemen from Kota Kinabalu BBP as well as a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) and a water tanker were sent to the location.

“The operation led by Senior Officer (PBK II) Mohd Khairul Kohir found that a row of non-permanent five -door ‘kongsi’ and four non-permanent houses had caught fire.

“The extinguishing operation was carried out using a stream of 300 feet with four fountains and a stream of 400 feet with two fountains using water sources from machinery tanks, water tankers and nearby fire hydrants,” he said.

According to the operation commander, the incident did not involve any casualties or injuries and the fire was brought under control at 4.29pm.
