KUALA LUMPUR – The Youth and Sports Minister has announced that the monthly training allowance for Southeast Asian Games medallists will be increased effective immediately.
SEA Games silver medallists will now receive RM1500 each month compared to RM800 previously while bronze medallists would receive RM1000, said Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu during a briefing session for national athletes and coaches at the National Sports Council (NSC) today.
Faizal has also urged the NSC to provide athletes, who do not meet the selection criteria for full-time training programmes, with assistance for each training session in phases.
“Accommodation assistance, training facilities, food, beverages and support services will be offered in accordance to plans proposed by each sports association.
“Be confident and believe that we will always strive to give you the best,” he said.
He also told our national athletes and coaches that the Youth and Sports Ministry has submitted an appeal to the Finance Ministry for more funding.
“At the same time, I fully support the steps taken by the NSC to restructure the training programmes, particularly in terms of tightening the selection criteria of athletes for the year.
“The contract offered now is focused on preparation for certain sporting events with the allowance centred on the achievements of an athlete in those respective games,” he added.
Faizal also announced that the national contingent would be participating in the Islamic Solidarity Games in Turkey this August as well as the Asian Youth Games in Shantou, China in December.
Apart from that, the national contingent will also be competing at this year’s SEA Games in Vietnam, Commonwealth Games in Birmingham as well as the Asian Games and Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China. – The Vibes, January 26, 2022
