I first came across the company while job-hunting on a job search portal. I was pretty naive back then. I didn’t know what “sugar dating” or “sugaring” was all about and the truth is told, I’ve never even heard of the term before but I did have a vague idea of what a sugar daddy was ie. an older, wealthy man who was ready to spoil younger women with his riches. “If you want to be rich, get a sugar daddy”, I always hear people say. The company was advertising a content writer position, which I enthusiastically applied for.
After getting shortlisted and completing a writing test, I was ecstatic when I received a call from the CEO himself inviting me for an interview. I still remember that day like it was yesterday. I was walking around in a bookstore feeling sorry for myself for being unemployed, when I suddenly got a call from a youthful yet professional-sounding gentleman, telling me that he was impressed with my writing and portfolio. At that time, I had no idea that he was the CEO but I was elated nevertheless.
So an interview date was set. Since they were urgently in need of a content writer, I was offered the job just several days after the interview. In no time, I found myself heading down to the office to sign the job contract and immediately start my probation as the copywriter/content specialist at the sugar dating firm.
My First Day
On my first day there, I was introduced to my colleagues, just a small team of about 10 of them. It was an open-plan office, so everyone was seated facing each other on tables that were arranged horizontally in the middle of the office. The office was very spacious with a small pantry at one corner and a lounge area right next to the pantry and more space that were pending renovation.
So I got acquainted with the team, which consisted of the HR Manager, the Public Relations and Marketing team, the Digital Marketing Head, another fellow content writer and the IT team. They were a young bunch in their 20s and 30s. The person in charge of the Public Relations and Marketing team was just a young girl 5 years my junior (hint: I was 29) and she was given the task of carrying out my orientation. The CEO, a very friendly, charismatic personality, was also in his early 30s.
An Eye-Opening Experience
As a content specialist at the sugar dating firm, some of my duties included writing a blog post every 2 weeks for the company’s website/app. So I did my research on the world wide web to further expose myself to the world of sugar dating. It was then that I got more acquainted with the term “sugar baby”, which usually refers to a younger, attractive woman who offers her “companionship” to a sugar daddy in exchange for financial support and material benefits.
Now don’t get me wrong. I did realize that such relationships existed but I wasn’t aware that sugar dating was a thriving industry around the world, so I was pretty intrigued. I also wrote a few articles targetting sugar babies. One of them, for instance, provided tips to sugar babies on how to negotiate their allowances. Besides producing blog posts, I was also tasked to come up with “sexy, witty” copy for the company’s sales campaigns, emails and push notifications targetting both sugar daddies and sugar babies. And just for the fun of it, I came up with my own fake sugar baby profile on the sugar dating app just to see how it works.
Overall, working for not just a dating company, but a sugar dating company, was indeed an eye-opening experience for me. While I excelled at writing their blog articles, I didn’t fare so well when it came to capturing the brand’s “sexy yet witty” writing style. Dating wasn’t what I excelled in any way and writing in such a tone just wasn’t my style, so I decided to resign after two months of working there. I am aware that sugar dating is a shady business to some of you, but it is a business nonetheless and that’s how I chose to approach it.
Now, it’s been two years since my stint at the sugar dating company. Although I didn’t stay there for long, I enjoyed their vibrant and interactive working culture. Working there was like a breath of fresh air despite its challenges. Though I didn’t survive my probation there, I choose to take that chapter of my life as an eye-opening and intriguing learning experience, one that I can share with my children, if I ever get married.
