The Uruguay international has less than 18 months to run on his contract and is unhappy with the progress of negotiations over a new deal.
Araujo's agent Edmundo Kabchi has been snapped with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, with talk of a move to the English champions gathering pace.
However, Marca says United are also keen and in contact with Araujo's minders.
The interest of both Manchester clubs is bad news for Barca, which cannot afford to meet Araujo's demands due to their financial concerns.
