People are not as vocal about their mental health struggles and this especially applies to the workplace.

As team leaders, we need to initiate the conversation and also take action.

Here are some ways you can do them:

Have A Mental Health Sharing Session

This could be a weekly/bi-weekly or monthly check-in where your company/department does a catch-up session and talk about how they’ve been doing, what mental struggles they are going through and how we can support one another.

Have A Mental Health Fund

If your company can afford it, set aside a quarterly budget for those employees who want to consult a therapist to improve their well-being at work.

Some ways to reduce cost on this would be to find a therapist that is willing to reduce their session rate if you’re able to give him/her more clients or increase the frequency of sessions.

You can also try to seek sponsors to fund this mental health fund.

Organise Workshops & Talks

Inviting a professional to educate and raise awareness among team members is a great initiative.

A talk or workshop that is more work-focused would benefit employees and the companies.

For example, talking about how to deal with workplace burnout would be beneficial for employees but also the company because a company only can truly thrive when its employees are thriving.

Play Games To Make Mental Health Fun

Try to disguise mental health activities as games. Sometimes, employees do not want to open up or have no interest in discussing mental health. However, if you make it a game (with prizes would be even better) things get fun.

I hope these simple tips encourage you to have open conversations on mental health at the workplace.
